Tee Up With the Scots: The Forefathers of Mini Golf

As legend has it — and the history book — mini golf traces its roots to the Scots. While the game was not as detailed as it is today, the Scots introduced it to the world in the late 1800s.

During this time, the game was played in a yard that was only about a few meters long. This made it an easy setup in virtually any garden or backyard. The need for just a short amount of floor space and the undeniable competitive yet lighthearted fun this game brought forward really allowed it to make its mark on the first players of putting.

The easy play of the game ignited a wildfire of putt-putt enthusiasm that eventually spread through the U.S. in those early days. As the game began to grow in popularity, so too did the number of players. Those who did not have space to set up a putting field would even set up a course on their rooftops. Talk about a game with a view. It wasn’t until the 1920s and 1930s that the game saw impressive growth across the nation.

The Great Depression Influences Mini Golf

During the late 1920s and 1930s, the nation began heading toward the Great Depression, a time period that absolutely influenced the country. As the Great Depression settled across the U.S., Americans and immigrants naturally turned to activities and hobbies that helped them navigate what was certainly one of the darkest points in our history.

Players began to improve the game. Families, neighborhoods, and communities began creating courses featuring creative tracks, obstacles, and enhancements beyond a simple straight putt. As innovation grew, a new industry emerged — the commercialization of putting, now known as mini golf.

As creativity flourished, so did the many different courses available. During this time period, it’s believed that over four million people in the U.S. were playing mini golf.

This Mini Golf Industry Is Born

Many argue that mini golf was put on the map in 1953 when Don Clayton created golf courses that tested the skills of the most advanced players. Clayton’s courses featured short holes, obstacles, metal rails that can be used for rebounding, and other fixtures that helped to elevate the game.

His company helped to push mini golf as we know it today onto the commercial scene. Other creative entrepreneurs created similar obstacle courses for the public to try.

Today, you don’t have to drive very far to find mini golfing establishments that cater to the competitive, fun-filled environment that families, experienced mini-putters, newbies, and couples look for. In fact, the mini golf industry is one of the most sought-after entertainment venues in the nation. According to analysts, the mini golf market is worth just under half a billion dollars.
